A Simulation Study on the Effect of the Left Ventrical Ejection Profile

Method: A dynamic seventh-order pressure-driven model of the human cardiovascular system was used to model the effect of the AVD. An eighth state (AVD) was added, which accepts blood from the left ventricle with a controlled impedance (i.e. dynamic pressure vs. flow relationship) when the left ventricle opens, and which then empties, delivering the blood to the body when the left ventricle closes. Requiring that all the blood be ejected from the AVD for each beat during native heart diastole, the effects of varying AVD blood ejection profiles was investigated. These profiles included i) constant pressure, ii) constant flow, and iii) spline curve fits for flow.
